Please join us for our cloister day on the 21st of April 2018!

We are an enclosed contemplative community of Poor Clare sisters whose monastery is in Nuns’ Island, Galway. We have had a presence in Galway for over 375 years. From our beginnings in Gravelines in early seventeenth-century northern France, to Ireland of 2018, the same life of daily prayer, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, work, and Community life continues today, inspired by our holy founders St. Clare and St. Francis. St. Clare was the first female follower of St. Francis. She was captured by his vision of poverty, humility and simplicity and the resulting joy that flowed from a life lived in imitation of the Lord Jesus. It is this same Spirit-inspired vision which animates our Community today.

Whoever you are, or wherever you are, may you find, in the pages of our new website, strength and encouragement. Know that we remember you, our website visitors, and your intentions in our prayers.  In the words of St. Francis:

May the Lord give you peace!

O God,
I pray that I may know You and love You
So as eternally to rejoice in You.
And if, in the present life, I cannot do so fully,
Grant that my love and knowledge may at least grow on earth
That my joy may be fully in Heaven:
A joy expected here and there fulfilled.
O Lord our Father,
You counselled or rather commanded through Your Son,
That we ask for this fullness of joy, and You promised to grant it.
I ask of You, O Lord, that which, through Your Wonder-Counsellor,
You encouraged us to ask and promised to grant:
That our joy may be full!
Let my mind meditate on this joy, my tongue speak of it,
My heart desire it, my words extol it,
My soul hunger for it, my flesh thirst for it,
My whole substance yearn for it,
Until I enter into the joy of my God
Who is Triune and One,
Blessed forever.
Amen.

St. Bonaventure
