History

Welcome to our history section. Being the longest-surviving group of women religious in Ireland, there is a growing interest in the history of our Community. We intend over time to build up this section of the website by adding more information and digitised documents which will be of interest to casual readers and scholars alike.  For now the PDF's which are attached to this section provide a large amount of information on various aspects of our history

We are grateful to the copyright holders of articles republished here for granting permission to use them on this website. Website readers should be aware that articles are published here for information only and a separate permission must be sought from the copyright holders to use the articles for any other purpose.

Galway Poor Clare History by Celsus O' Brien OFM

A short article by Dr. Bronagh A. McShane

Our Lady of Bethlehem (Athlone Madonna)
Seventeenth Century translations of Poor Clare Documents

And when night comes, and you look back over the day and see how fragmentary everything has been and how much you planned that has gone undone, and all the reasons you have to be embarrassed and ashamed: just take everything exactly as it is, put it in God's hands and leave it with Him. Then you will be able to rest in Him - really rest - and start the next as a new life.

St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein)
