Lord Jesus Christ,
who is, who was, and who is to come,
we pray for the virtue of hope,
that amidst the trials and difficulties
of this world,
we may keep our hearts fixed
upon you, who reigns over the cosmos.
May your grace enliven us,
strengthen us,
and defend us,
as we await your coming in glory.

Amen

Advent Intercession

In the darkness of the world in which we live, that is overwhelmed by materialism, the only preparation for Christmas will be late night shopping and non-stop parties. We give thanks to our Father in Heaven for calling us to live in the light and giving us the gift of Faith, which allows us to prepare our hearts, souls and minds this Advent for the coming of our Saviour.

To share this gift with others, we journey with all those who are in the darkness of unbelief, emptiness and despair so that they too may receive the Light and experience the love and peace of God this Christmas and know the true joy of our Lords coming.

We invite you to journey with some or all of these groups and to pray for them perhaps using the accompanying Scripture/ Advent Liturgy:

This Advent I will journey with people who do not believe and are not practicing their Faith and so are not planning to rejoice in God's House this Christmas. I will especially remember Priests and Religious who have left the Church.
"I rejoiced when I heard them say, let us go to God's ho muse, and now our feet are standing within your gates O Jerusalem" (Ps121)

This Advent I will journey with all those suffering from addictions and their families, that the Divine Mercy of Jesus will reign in their hearts and that they will receive the Grace to overcome the power of their addiction.
"Let us see O Lord your mercy" (Alleluia)

This Advent I will journey with people whose lives have been given over to evil. May the Grace of God penetrate their hearts enabling them to repent and walk in the light of the Lord.
"Let us walk in the light of the Lord" (Is 2)

This Advent I will journey with young people who do not know the joyful and hopeful message that Christmas brings. As they partake in the nightlife leading up to and over the Christmas period I will pray that they are protected from the violence that results from excess drinking, drunken brawls, drug-related and promiscuous behaviour.
"Let us live decently as people do in the daytime" (Rom 13)

This Advent I will journey with those families affected by broken marriages and infidelity. May family values be protected during the party season and may children experience the love of baby Jesus in their hearts where love is lacking in their families.
"Forget about satisfying your bodies with all their cravings" (Rom 13)

This Advent I will journey with those who are mourning loved ones, especially those who have died over the Christmas period. As they are surrounded by the Christmas atmosphere, we ask you dear Jesus to give them the Grace to cope with their grief.
"For love of my brethren and friends I say Peace upon you" (Ps 121)

This Advent I will journey with people who suffer from depression and their families, especially those who are considering ending their lives, that God's Grace will penetrate the darkness that surrounds them, bringing them hope and strength.
"Give us your saving help" (Alleluia)

This Advent I will journey with those who will be separated from their families at Christmas, particularly prisoners, refugees and immigrants. May they receive Peace in their hearts to alleviate the pain of not being together.
"For love of my brethren and friends I say Peace upon you" (Ps 121)

This Advent I will journey with Priests and Religious who are not spiritually prepared or willing to prepare for Christmas. I pray that you may set theirs hearts on fire dear Jesus so that those you have entrusted to their care may catch the flame of your love and know that you live.
"For love of the house of the Lord, I will ask for your good" (Ps 121)

This Advent I will journey with people suffering from terminal illness and their families, that they may accept God's Will for their lives. May God give them health and peace so that they are able to enjoy this precious time with their families.
"To you my God I lift up my soul and I trust in you" (Entrance antiphon)

This Advent I will journey with people who have been hurt by abortion and who are considering it as an option, that the birth of our saviour may touch and heal their lives and give them the strength to welcome their babies into the world.
"That Christ may find an eager welcome at His coming" (Opening prayer)

This Advent I will journey with all families, especially children, who live in fear of abuse within their homes that the message of hope that the birth of Jesus brings, will give them the courage they need to seek help and that the love of Jesus will repair their shattered lives.
"Let your armour be the Lord Jesus Christ" (Rom 13)

This Advent I will journey with people who will die this Christmas, that their souls may be ready to enter Heaven and that God's mercy may envelop them.
"Stand ready because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect" (Mt 24)

This Advent I will journey with people who attack the Faith especially those who have been hurt by the Church, that their hearts and minds may be enlightened by the Truth and that the Church will recognise where she needs to provide healing and reconciliation.
"Increase our strength of will for doing good" (Opening prayer)

This Advent I will journey with people who will be alone or lonely this Christmas that they may experience the message of love that baby Jesus brings with His birth.
"Sustain us with your promise of Eternal Life" (Prayer over the gifts)

This Advent I will journey with World and Community leaders who do not promote the cause of Peace and all those who work against Peace.
"He will wield authority over the Nations and adjudicate between many peoples" (Is 2)

Concluding Prayer

All-powerful God,
increase our strength of will for doing good
that Christ may find an eager welcome at His coming
and call us to His side in the kingdom of heaven
where He lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit
one God for ever and ever.
Amen.
